August 2005—A Rainbow in Pittsburgh
From NeilDocs
Dear Theo, Sage and Nina,
Pretty much every weekday I walk to work. For many years I have walked over the Tenth Street Bridge across the Monongahela River that separates our house from my work. It is painted golden yellow, and it is the longest suspension bridge in the city of Pittsburgh, which has a lot of bridges. I always enjoy my walk across the bridge. I enjoy looking at the water and being out in the open air on the bridge. Often a breeze blows up the river. The air may be very still while one is walking through the streets, but then, when one starts to walk onto the bridge, the breeze picks up because it is not obstructed by buildings.
I remember walking home from work one evening. I normally read a book as I walk home, but this day it had been raining, so my book was in my back pack. The sun was setting, and as I walked up onto the bridge I saw off to my left, looking up the river, the most beautiful rainbow directly over the river and the city beyond it. The rainbow stayed in place the whole time I was walking across the bridge. I think it was the more beautiful because of the clear view I had of it, free of trees or buildings, over the river.
The rainbow made for a beautiful walk home that evening. I am grateful for the all the color and variety of the natural world that our Heavenly Father designed for us to enjoy.
Love, Grandpa Evan
